*24/08 Article GEYSKENS, Leon - Antwerpse inlegtegels in een Europese context, Rapporten van het Stedelijk informatiecentrum archeologie & monumentenzorg, 7, 2011. 100 pagina's, PDF-formaat.
De auteur, Leon Geyskens, heeft gedurende meerdere jaren de Antwerpse vondsten van inlegtegels bestudeerd en deze geconfronteerd met exemplaren die in België, Nederland en Engeland worden aangetroffen. Een inventaris van 419 tegels en tegelfragmenten kon opgedeeld worden in hoofdzakelijk drie grote groepen: spreuktegels, datumtegels en tegels met een renaissance decoratie. Met de logistieke steun van Frans Caignie kon het resultaat van de studie vastgelegd worden in een ruim artikel. Nooit eerder werd deze materie zo grondig en zo ruim bestudeerd en kenbaar gemaakt.

*12/06 Open Museum day - Gilliotmarkt. Ook dit jaar stelt het Gilliot & Roelantsmuseum zijn deuren open voor het grote publiek tijdens de jaarlijkse Gilliotmarkt op zondag 19 juni 2011 van 13.30 tot 18.00 uur. Buiten de vaste collecties ontwerpen, gietvormen, loonboeken en bijzondere tegels, kunnen de bezoekers tijdens de Gilliotmarkt ook luisteren naar voordrachten van keramiekspecialisten of tijdens de veiling hun tegels verkopen of ruilen met andere liefhebbers. Dit alles tegen de achtergrond van de prachtige Sint-Bernardusabdij van Hemiksem. Dagprogramma:
13.30u: Lezing “Een tegelschat van papier: inventarisatie en conservatie van het fonds ontwerptekeningen van Gilliot Hemiksem” door Mario Baeck (Tegelspecialist) in de Roelantszaal van het Gilliot & Roelants Tegelmuseum. Duur: maximum 60 minuten.
14.30u tot 16.00u: Tegelschatting in de inkomhal van het Administratief Centrum (gemeentehuis).
15.00u en 16.30u: Kleine wandeling (ongeveer 3 km) uitgewerkt en geleid door Geert Roggeman die langs bezienswaardigheden i.v.m. Gilliot leidt, o.a. de ontwijde kerk in de Saunierlei.
Doorlopend: Tentoonstelling van een selectie foto’s die recent zijn bekomen. Hopelijk kunnen bezoekers ons vertellen of zij mensen herkennen.

*17/05 Book & Exhibition ADRIAENSSENS Werner, BAECK Mario, e.a. - Belgische Art Deco Keramiek - Céramiques de l’Art déco en Belgique (tweetalige uitgave).
Belgische art decokeramiek wordt vandaag vooral geassocieerd met het werk van Charles Catteau (1880-1966) voor Boch Frères Keramis in La Louvière. Zijn productie, en dat van zijn Atelier de Fantaisie, uit de periode 1920 tot 1940 geniet vandaag volkomen terecht een wereldwijde erkenning en haalt hoge prijzen. Veel andere Belgische keramisten en productiecentra, die in het interbellum soms zeer geslaagde art decokeramiek op de markt brachten, bleven tot op heden sterk onderbelicht en ondergewaardeerd. >>>>> Folder voorverkoop
In een grote overzichtstentoonstelling die achtereenvolgens loopt in het Museum Torhouts Aardewerk (van 28 mei tot en met 4 september 2011) en het Musée de la Céramique d’Andenne (van 17 september 2011 tot 8 januari 2012) en in de begeleidende kunstmonografie, samen gesteld door een aantal vooraanstaande specialisten, worden alle belangrijke Vlaamse, Waalse en Brusselse producenten voor het eerst ruim gepresenteerd. Daarbij komen alle deeltechnieken en toepassingsvormen van keramiek aan bod: van aardewerk over faience en majolica tot steengoed en porselein, van gebruiksgoed over bouwaardewerk en tegels tot luxe kunstvoorwerpen en unica. Bijzondere aandacht gaat naar de zeer karakteristieke figurines in zogenaamd craquelé, naar de typische schouwgarnituren

*15/04 11de Internationaal Salon van de Oude Keramiek en Verzamelobjecten, Club van Lotharingen, voormalig Hotel de Merode, Poelaertplein 6, Brussel, 29 april - 02 mei 2011. De jaarlijkse ontmoeting voor liefhebbers en verzamelaars van vuurkunsten en verzamelobjecten brengt een twintigtal antiquairs vanuit België, Frankrijk en Engeland bijeen. Na 10 jaar in het kasteel van Edingen, verhuist het Salon en breidt uit.

*07/04 Research report LEMPKE, Ivonne - Fabric Analyse van Majolicategels uit het kasteel van Breda - vergelijkend onderzoek met majolicategels uit Antwerpen en Bergen-op-Zoom, mei 2008, pp.65.

In het onderzoek werden door middel van macroscopische techniek tegels afkomstig uit het Kasteel van Breda vergeleken met tegels afkomstig van 8 verschillende vindplaatsen in Antwerpen en tegels afkomstig van 2 verschillende vindplaatsen in Bergen-op-Zoom. Als testmateriaal werden nog tegels met een onduidelijke context - maar waarschijnlijk afkomstig uit Antwerpen - en tegels afkomstig uit Monnickendam (Nederland) in het onderzoek meegenomen.

*10/07 TACS database online - On Saturday 2nd July 2011, at their 30th Anniversary AGM, the TACS committee has launched a new online TACS database of tiled locations in the UK. This TACS database contains some 6000 entries, or just over twice the number of locations that are to be found in the Tile Gazetteer (published by TACS in 2005). In putting this database online TACS is making freely available site specific information to a wider audience, from the interested member of the public through to researchers, conservation officers and all those with specialist interest in particular sites within the UK.

During the mid 19th century Britain was not only the world’s leading imperial power, but was also its foremost exporter of architectural ceramics. The expansion of British territories led to the construction of many public and ecclesiastical buildings displaying the best of British design in ceramic terms.
The conference draws its inspiration from this export of British design and culture, and seeks to explore its consequences for the manufacturing industries of Stoke and beyond, for Britain, and for the former Empire.
The conference will be of interest to ceramic and cultural historians, archivists and curators, and to anyone with an interest in the histories of Stoke-on-Trent, the British tile industry, British manufacturing industry in general, and the British Empire.

Carrelage du château médiéval d'Orgelet*20/09 Collection - Carrelage médiéval à l'église d'Orgelet, Jura.
Ce carrelage a été découvert en 1975 lors des fouilles du château.
Il constituait sans doute le sol de la salle d'audience du château des seigneurs d'Orgelet. C'est le plus magnifique témoin de la forteresse qui dominait Orgelet et un inestimable ouvrage d'art.
Il est daté de la fin du XIII° siècle.
Il comprend environ 3000 carreaux et couvre à peu prêt 50 m². Le carrelage primitif a subi deux réparations, en bas à droite et en haut à gauche.

*12/08 Internet publication - Ayed Ben Amara, Nicole Gourdon-Platel, Françoise Bechtel, Max Schvoerer et Philippe Bon, "Carreaux glaçurés provenant d'un château du Duc de Berry (Mehun-sur-Yèvre, fin XIVe siècle): recherche d'indices techniques". À la fin du XIVe siècle, des céramistes d'Espagne vont exporter leur savoir-faire en France à la demande du duc Jean de Berry (1340 - 1416). Des matériaux nouveaux et des techniques avancées sont ainsi mis en œuvre dans un contexte d'échange entre régions européennes (Valence, Gérone et Berry, Bourgogne). Une particularité des céramiques glaçurées produites est de présenter un décor de couleur bleue, ce qui est innovant pour l'époque en France. On entreprend dans cette étude de compléter les observations des archéologues en déterminant les caractéristiques physiques des matériaux (colorants, texture et constituants de la glaçure et de la terre cuite) et en recherchant des indices sur les techniques de fabrication.

 De invloed van Ovidius' Metamorphosen reikt verder dan de literatuur. Zijn verhalen over wonderbare gedaanteveranderingen zijn tevens deel gaan uitmaken van de materiële cultuur. De Metamorphosen is niet alleen een inspiratiebron voor beeldend kunstenaars geweest; scènes uit het werk zijn ook terug te vinden in allerlei vormen van toegepaste kunst. Er was echter nog geen onderzoek gedaan naar de verbeelding van de Metamorphosen in de decoratie van de Nederlandse wandtegel. Dit prachtig geïllustreerde boek maakt dat ruimschoots goed. In het eerste hoofdstuk presenteert Reinhard Stupperich van het Archeologisch Instituut van de Universiteit van Heidelberg, de context van de Metamorphosen en de invloed van het werk in de Westerse cultuur. In daaropvolgende hoofdstukken beschrijven Jan Pluis en Reinhard Stupperich de afzonderlijke voorstellingen en wordt de lezer geholpen deze te herkennen en te duiden. Behalve Ovidius' verhalen komen ook andere mythologische thema's aan bod, zoals cupido's, zeewezens en arcadische taferelen. De auteurs hebben ernaar gestreefd bij iedere voorstelling ook de grafische bronnen af te beelden of te vermelden. Een bijzonder en smaakvol vormgegeven boek over de doorwerking van de klassieke oudheid in de Nederlandse toegepaste kunst.

*17/08 Tile panel being restored - Een tegeltableau boven de poort van het Birgitinessenklooster in Uden / Museum voor religieuze kunst is in restauratie. Het tableau dateert uit ca. 1900 en is een productie van Van Hulst in Harlingen. Er is nu een replica geplaatst, het origineel komt na restauratie binnen te hangen in het Museum voor religieuze kunst.

*06/05 Collectors survey - In 2003-2005 deed Keramiekmuseum Princessehof, Leeuwarden, een uitgebreid onderzoek naar het verzamelen van keramiek in Nederland. *01/05 Study tour - The Nederlands Tegelmuseum (Dutch Tile Museum) in Otterlo is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. From 7 till 15 May a party of 29 Friends of the Museum will be visiting Portugal and studying tiles and architecture in Óbidos, Caldas da Rainha, Nazaré, Valado dos Frades, Alcobaça, Batalha, Atalaia, Tomar, Figueira da Foz, Bussaco, Coimbra, Aveiro, Braga, Guimarães and Porto.

*19/04 Exhibition "Haardstenen en de haard, maaslandse haardstenen, productie, verspreiding, toepassing en versiering.", in: Limburgs Museum, Venlo. Van 1 mei tot 1 oktober 2010. Bij de verschijning van de publicatie Haardstenen en de haard. Maaslandse haardstenen, productie, verspreiding, toepassing en versiering wordt een presentatie van circa zeventig haardstenen ingericht in het Limburgs Museum. Het onderwerp wordt vanuit diverse invalshoeken belicht. De uiteindelijke verschijningsvorm van haardstenen is vaak zeer in het oog springend en alleen daarom is het al de moeite waard om dit vaak artistieke element van historische interieurs eens aan een ruimer publiek te tonen.

In Rotterdam zijn er van het begin van de zeventiende eeuw tot aan 1866 vele miljoenen tegels gebakken. Deze gigantische productie varieert van de welbekende, 'Delftse', blauw beschilderde tegeltjes met bijvoorbeeld kinderspel, ambachten en Bijbelse voorstellingen tot aan zeer fraaie en bijzondere tegels en indrukwekkende tegeltableaus. Een flink deel ervan was bestemd voor export; Rotterdamse tegels zijn te zien in Franse kastelen, Duitse paleizen, Spaanse en Portugese kerken en zelfs in het Topkapi paleis in Istanbul.
Tegels uit Rotterdam is gebaseerd op de omvangrijke collectie tegels in het Historisch Museum Rotterdam. Twee conservatoren van het museum geven respectievelijk een breed overzicht van, en een gedetailleerd inzicht in de Rotterdamse tegelproductie. Daarbij komen aspecten als techniek, kosten, bedrijfsvoering en export aan de orde.
Daarnaast bevat het boek een apart katern met de beste stukken uit de collectie van het Historisch Museum Rotterdam en drie artikelen die op deelonderwerpen ingaan: de bijproducten uit de tegelbakkerijen, zoals borden, plaquettes en siervoorwerpen, de sprookjesachtige tegeldecoraties in de paleizen van de keurvorst van Keulen in Brühl, en het reilen en zeilen van de laatste tegelbakkerij in Rotterdam.
Dit geheel wordt gecompleteerd met een dvd met daarop het uit 1920 daterende basisboek De Rotterdamsche plateel- en tegelbakkers en hun product en al het beeldmateriaal van Rotterdamse tegelbakkerijen in de collectie van het Gemeentearchief Rotterdam.

The exhibition has around 120 tile panels from the Art Nouveau period. It is the first exhibition taking place in Portugal focusing only on Art Nouveau Design in the tile production of the time. *01/05 Study tour - The Nederlands Tegelmuseum (Dutch Tile Museum) in Otterlo, The Netherlands, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. From 7 till 15 May a party of 29 Friends of the Museum will be visiting Portugal and studying tiles and architecture in Óbidos, Caldas da Rainha, Nazaré, Valado dos Frades, Alcobaça, Batalha, Atalaia, Tomar, Figueira da Foz, Bussaco, Coimbra, Aveiro, Braga, Guimarães and Porto.

*09/03 Azulejos da Estação do Pinhão - The railway station of Pinhão, which lies on the Douro some distance east of Régua, is decorated with 24 tile pictures, with a total of 3047 tiles, depicting rural scenes of the Douro region. They are in blue and white, with additional colours in the borders. The tiles were manufactured by the Fábrica Aleluia in Aveiro and painted by J. Oliveira in 1937. Only few trains are still operating on this line but the station has been drawing more visitors since 2008, when a Wine House and a shop with local produce were set up there. The railway company Refer together with the MNAz (National Tile Museum in Lisbon) will now restore the 24 panels. This is very good news, as too many abandoned railway stations have fallen into disrepair or been robbed of their tiles.

*14/04 Instituto de Promoción Cerámica - Communication: "The Instituto de Promoción Cerámica is a Spanish Institute belonging as an independent body to the Castellon County Council (Valencia, Spain). Located in the most important industrial ceramic region in Europe, the main objective of this institute is promoting the use of ceramics applied to architecture. To do so, the institute develops measures aimed at obtaining a better historical knowledge of ceramic applications in buildings. Besides, it promotes innovation and professional training in this area.
  Created in 1982, our first aim was to support industrial ceramic tile manufacturing, for which we established a documentation centre that would provide the sector’s business and technical stakeholders with quality, topical information, as well as on developing a programme for the promotion of ceramic industrial design, of technical marketing as an instrument at the service of the marketing and sales, and of the installation quality of ceramic tilings. In order to make our services available to professionals and public interested in Ceramics applied to the habitat, our Institute has developed a website http://www.ipc.org.es where useful contents are available for consult. The different sections include a large Documentation Centre specialising in Ceramics applied to Architecture, which is constantly updated; a Covering Installation Guide, with information on everything regarding materials, techniques, substrates, defects, malfunctions, etc involved in tile installation. Besides, and as a demonstration of our will to provide a wide range of information dealing with the world of ceramics, there are other sections such as History of Architectural Ceramics and Ceramics within your Reach that will be activated in the near future. As you will note when consulting the contents in our website, many of them have been already translated into English, and at present we are working on the translation of the other sections.
  Another aspect of our work deals with the publication of different books regarding both Covering Installation and Architectural Ceramics.
